چکیده

[1] Analysis of receiver functions from an eight-station network on the Saudi Arabian shield indicates that the Moho depths vary between 35–38 km. The crust appears to be rather felsic in nature as evidenced by Poisson’s ratios of 0.25–0.27. A prominent negative phase following the Moho conversion is suggestive of a zone of velocity inversion. Indication of mantle stratification is observed beneath the coastal region of Arabia, by way of an additional upper mantle discontinuity at about 240 km. The conversions from the 410 and 660-km discontinuities are significantly delayed, suggesting a slow and hot upper mantle.

A multistep approach for joint modeling of surface wave dispersion and teleseismic receiver functions: Implications for lithospheric structure of the Arabian Peninsula

[1] We present a multiple step procedure for joint modeling of surface wave group velocity dispersion curves and teleseismic receiver functions for lithospheric velocity structure. The method relies on an initial grid search for a simple crustal structure, followed by a formal iterative inversion, an additional grid search for shear wave velocity in the mantle, and finally, forward modeling of ...

Seismic velocity structure and depth-dependence of anisotropy in the Red Sea and Arabian shield from surface wave analysis

[1] We investigate the lithospheric and upper mantle shear wave velocity structure and the depth-dependence of anisotropy along the Red Sea and beneath the Arabian Peninsula using receiver function constraints and phase velocities of surface waves traversing two transects of stations from the Saudi Arabian National Digital Seismic Network. Frequency-dependent phase delays of fundamental-mode Lo...

How juvenile is the Arabian–Nubian Shield? Evidence from Nd isotopes and pre-Neoproterozoic inherited zircon in the Bi'r Umq suture zone, Saudi Arabia

The Bi'r Umq suture zone (BUSZ) in western Saudi Arabia comprises Neoproterozoic oceanic-arc plutonic, volcanosedimentary, and ophiolitic rocks that record some of the earliest magmatic and tectonic events of the East African Orogen in the Arabian–Nubian Shield (ANS). New Nd isotopic analyses are combined with data on zircon inheritance and published isotopic studies to establish the case that ...

Granulite xenoliths from western Saudi Arabia: the lower crust of the late Precambrian Arbian-Nubian Shield

Marie and intermediate granulite xenoliths, collected from Cenozoic alkali basalts, provide samples of the lower crust in western Saudi Arabia. The xenoliths are metaigneous two-pyroxene and garnet granulites. Mineral and whole rock compositions are inconsistent with origin from Red Sea rift-reIated basalts, and are compatible with origin from island arc calc-alkatine and low-potassium tholeiit...

Shear-velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath the Tibetan Plateau and southeastern China

S U M M A R Y This paper addresses the velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle beneath southern China with special emphasis on the Tibet region. Waveform data from 48 earthquakes as recorded on the WWSSN and GDSN are used in this detailed forward modelling study. Constraints on the upper crustal section are derived from modelling local Love waves in the time domain applying the mode-su...
